What is Fistula?

An anal fistula is an infected tunnel that connects the skin to the anus, the muscular opening at the end of the digestive tract. The majority of anal fistulas are caused by an infection in an anal gland that spreads to the skin. It can cause bleeding or discharge of blood or pus from the anus while passing stools, which can be excruciatingly painful, and if the anal fistula becomes severe, drainage can last for a long time.

Diagnosis

An anorectal expert will usually conduct a physical examination. He'll look for oozing fluid and bleeding from that area. Colonoscopy is required to make a more accurate diagnosis in patients with anal fistula.

Treatment

Laser treatment for fistulas is now the most effective treatment for anal fistulas. Hospitalization is usually for one day, with a quicker recovery. Another treatment option is fistulectomy, which involves making a cut in the fistula’s internal opening and flushing out infected tissue. The channel is flattened and sewn in place.

For severe and complex fistulas, the surgeon may remove some of the channels; in such cases, two to three stages of treatment are required if prominent sphincter muscles must be cut or if the entire channel is missing and untraceable.
