What is Fissure?
An anal fissure is a small cut or tear in the anus lining. During and after bowel movements, the crack in the skin causes severe pain and some bright red bleeding. The fissure can sometimes be deep enough to expose the muscle tissue beneath.
Fissures can happen to all age groups and can be managed with a healthy diet & simple treatments. Few people might need to undergo occasional surgery for the best treatment of anal fissures.

Who is at risk?
- Less blood flow to rectal area
- During infancy, anal fissures are common. Because of decreased blood flow in the anorectal area, older adults are also prone to anal fissures. Women are at risk for anal fissures during and after childbirth due to straining during delivery.
- IBD patients are also more likely to develop anal fissures. Because of the inflammation in the intestinal lining, the tissue around the anus is more prone to tearing.
- People who have constipation regularly are more likely to develop anal fissures.
